Introduction

Dear Reader,

Thanks for picking up a copy of this Start-Up Kit.  It excites us that you are interested in learning more about the behind-the-scenes processes that allow Camp PALS to run each summer.  Camp PALS has been a program for teenagers with Down syndrome, but the Camp PALS model -- which you can read about below -- is applicable to any group of individuals that would benefit from total social inclusion.

This guide is the result of extended conversations among the Camp PALS directors.  We believe that the Camp PALS model has the potential to affect individuals across the country and, indeed, around the world.  We wanted to provide the tools for interested individuals to understand better our program and to decide if the Camp PALS model is right for them.

The following pages should be considered a guide -- no more or less -- as you think about the role you can play in creating more opportunities for individuals with disabilities.  It is intended to give you some of the tools to create your own program.  We hope that you will look to us as friends and mentors if you choose to embark on this process.

On a final note, we view this guide as a compilation of all prior experiences, and we look forward to adding to this guide.  Together, we can continue to improve this program and make it better for future generations of Camp PALS campers and counselors.

Good luck,

Abby Kolker, Jenni Newbury, Josh Stein, and Jason Toff
